The Blue Hole Gozo

Blue Hole in Dwerja is probably the most famous scuba dive site in Gozo, and one of the most beautiful dives of the Maltese Islands. This is a great place for diving, snorkeling and swimming.

We dive in Gozo, from shore all year round, crossing with the Gozo ferry.  The two most popular shore diving sites are the Blue hole and the Inland sea.  The Blue hole involves a long walk, fully kitted over sharp rocks, so it is not for the faint hearted.  However the reward is a spectacular dive rated as one of the best in the world.  The natural hole has been formed from years of wave action and an exit in the hole leads to the open sea.  As this exit becomes treacherous in certain wind conditions, it is important to have a good understanding of local winds and weather.

We would usually dive the inland sea after the Blue Hole and a pleasant surface interval can be spent exploring Dwerja in between the two dives.  The Azure window that used to frame the blue sea beyond and was one of the most photographed sites in Malta, collapsed into the sea in a storm in 2017. Although missing at the surface, it now adds to the beauty underwater.
