2018 promises to be an excellent year to visit Malta. When you are not diving you can expect to find lots of extra events marking Valletta's position as Europe's Capital of Culture for 2018. The year kicked off with an inauguration ceremony on the 20th January and was attended by over 110,000 people. Events throughout the year will be held during the day and evenings so set aside some time from your dive schedule to get the most out of your trip.
We have just received an award from PADI to recognise 20 years service as a PADI Resort. The award arrived a little late as we first became a PADI resort in 1996 but we are very pleased to have it just the same.

On the 27th June, the dive centre beach was the finishing post for the Gozo to Malta Marigold Channel Swim event. Michelle Muscat, the wife of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat swam from Gozo to the Paradise Bay Hotel Beach in very choppy conditions. As she passed through the Blue Lagoon she was joined by Malta’s Special Olympics swimming team for the last leg of her journey. The event raised funds for the Marigold Foundation and the Special Olympics team.

International Workshop on Marine Biodiversity in Malta.
During September we were delighted to welcome the Biodivmex 2014 research scientists. This international team of scientists were involved in various research projects in conjunction with the University of Malta. Although they had their own research vessel we were able to give them easier access to the caves of Gozo and Comino with our boats. The group stayed at the Paradise Bay Resort Hotel.
Paradise Diving were pleased to sponsor a charity Try Dive Event in aid of the Richmond Foundation for Mental Health.
The event was organized by Scuba World Diving Amateur Diving Club and was held at Paradise Diving on the beach. The event was a great success and over 80 participants took part to make their first dive in the sea. Many thanks to all those who assisted.
Congratulations to our instructor, Mark Furnival MDST, who came joint first in the 2013 STAR Awards on the 24th February 2014 for the season of 2013. Thanks to all the Paradise Diving customers who voted for him!

Mark Furnival and Noel Micallef
Mark Furnival and Noel Micallef volunteered for an underwater clean up in November. The location was off our dive centre beach. They did not find huge amounts of rubbish as it is a Blue Flag beach but a recent storm had brought in some debris. The rubbish was sorted for recycling by local school children.
Turtle release at Paradise Diving beach
The clean up event was timed to coincide with the release of four turtles by Nature Trust Malta. The event was well attended by local children and sponsored by HSBC bank. Our instructor, Mark Furnival, positioned himself underwater, prior to the turtles' release. By using his rebreather he was able to film the turtles without alarming them. Unfortunately we did not have the exceptional visibility we are used to, as there had been a storm the previous day, which had stirred a lot of seaweed. However he did manage to get some worthwhile footage of the youngest turtle which seemed happy to hang around, for quite some time. Visit our facebook group page to see the video.
